Frequently Asked Questions
Dental emergencies include severe toothache, knocked-out or broken teeth, dental abscesses (facial swelling), uncontrolled bleeding, lost crowns or fillings causing pain, and any dental trauma. If you're in severe pain or distress, we consider it an emergency.
We keep same-day emergency slots available and prioritise patients in pain. In most cases, we can see you within a few hours of calling. Call us as early as possible in the day for the best chance of an immediate appointment.
Time is critical! Find the tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse if dirty, and try to put it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk or saliva and get to us within 30-60 minutes. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
Take over-the-counter painkillers (ibuprofen is often most effective for dental pain), apply a cold compress to your cheek, and try to sleep with your head elevated. Call us first thing in the morning for an emergency appointment. Our answerphone provides out-of-hours guidance.
If you're in pain or the tooth has sharp edges hurting your tongue, call us for an emergency appointment. If there's no pain, it's still important to be seen soon to prevent further damage - call us to arrange an appointment within a few days.
Emergency treatment costs vary depending on what's needed. NHS emergency treatment is covered by Band 2 (approximately 73). Private emergency consultations start from around 75, with treatment costs depending on what's required. We'll always explain costs before proceeding.
We welcome emergency patients even if you're not registered with us. Call us to explain your situation and we'll do our best to help. You can also register as a patient at the same time if you wish.
